Everyone knows the dangers of smoking, but a new study suggests the habit is likely made even more hazardous by air pollution. In the study, researchers report that long-term exposure to ozone in the atmosphere has significant effects on lung function. According to UPI, the effects are even more pronounced among heavy smokers. Smokers living in urban regions, where ozone levels are higher, were more likely to be diagnosed with debilitating lung disease. Emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders are the most common diagnosis for smokers in these areas. The severity of these conditions is also markedly increased in smokers in urban areas. The study found that poor air quality may reduce breathing capacity by 2.5 percent.
