In a company blog post this week, Uber announced that it has acquired the machine learning startup Geometric Intelligence. There are already at least 15 GI employees now on Uber’s driving roster, but the acquisition means that the ride-sharing app could eventually replace all of its human drivers. CEO Travis Kalanick says that’s not going to happen anytime soon, but it seems now that it will happen eventually. In its post, Uber goes on to say that that part of GI’s mission is to “redefine the boundaries of machine learning through innovative, patent-pending techniques," as well as form the foundation for a whole new artificial intelligence unit within Uber.
