The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday it will no longer require event data recorders in all new cars and trucks. During the Obama administration, NHTSA had proposed requiring 'black boxes' in all vehicles, but had not finalized it. Reuters reports that in 2012, the agency also proposed new standards requiring the capture of safety-related data. The technology was to capture the data in the seconds before and during a motor vehicle crash. The head of consumer advocacy group Center for Auto Safety questioned the regulator’s move.
