According to a report by Reuters, on Tuesday, oil giant BP said that extreme temperatures around the world drove a sharp acceleration in energy demand and carbon emissions last year, issuing a stark warning that the world risks losing its battle against climate change. In the company’s 2019 Statistical Review of World Energy, BP Chief Economist Spencer Dale said that while 2018 saw another sharp up-tick in renewable power, continued growth in oil, gas and coal consumption meant that overall, the world’s energy mix remained “depressingly” flat. Reuters reports that the 2.9% rise in energy demand in 2018, the fastest since 2010, deals a considerable blow to global efforts to meet the 2015 Paris climate agreement.
