In a national effort to help women, Melinda Gates has pledged to spend $1 billion dollars over the next decade to promote gender equality in America. In an essay for Time magazine published Wednesday morning, Gates talks about her intention to increase “women’s power and influence in the United States.” The philanthropist, who is also Bill Gates's wife, hopes that her contribution can help jumpstart change. She writes, “I believe that women’s potential is worth investing in ― and the people and organizations working to improve women’s lives are, too.” Through her company, Pivotal Ventures, she plans to fund research and data on gender inequality. She'll also pour resources into companies that are actively trying to fast-track the careers of women in technology, business, politics, and the media industries. She adds, “I want to see more women in the position to make decisions, control resources, and shape policies and perspectives.”
