Huffpo reports Kayla Kenney is a freshman at Whitefield Academy in Louisville, Kentucky. Kenney wore the rainbow shirt to a restaurant for her birthday and had a cake topped with rainbow icing. After seeing the photos of the celebration on facebook, Whitefield’s head of school expelled her. The head of school stated this demonstrated “a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to Whitefield Academy’s beliefs". Kenney does not identify as LGBTQ and has repeatedly stated the shirt and cake were simply colorful and festive. “There was nothing intended- I went back and got the receipt from the bakery, it didn’t say anything about representation, it just said assorted colors.” Kenney's mom Whitefield Academy's code of conduct says it “unapologetically advocates preservation of a uniquely Christian worldview.” The school, affiliated with Highview Baptist Church, rejected the family's efforts to file an appeal.
